Productive Learning (PL) – What is it?
Productive Learning is at the heart of our work – an educational offering that we have been developing since the founding of our institute.
The idea behind the project: young people in Productive Learning use the „city as a place of learning“, become active at practical places of their choice, explore and develop their field of activity and integrate their very personal and practical experiences into their school learning. Their experiential development becomes the basis of their educational process.
Key aspects in brief
- For three days a week, young people gain real world experience working in companies, social or cultural institutions of their choice .
- Learning takes place on the basis of the experience at the practical workplace as well as the individual curriculum of the student.
- The practical experience and school-based learning are systematically interlinked.
- Learning processes are continuously developed , reflected upon and documented by the young people on their own responsibility and in a self-determined manner.
- Individual educational counselling is frequently provided to students by their teachers and professional mentors.
Productive Learning
We know a thing or two about school development. We have been part of it for over 30 years now. Productive Learning is at the heart of our work – an educational offering that we have been developing since the founding of our institute.
Since the „City-as-School“ Berlin – inspired by the alternative New York „City-As-School“ – was granted school status as a public school trial of secondary level I in Berlin-Kreuzberg in August 1992, we have been committed to spreading Productive Learning in the firm conviction that we have developed an educational offer that makes learning practical, close to life and meaningful.
The positive experiences encouraged us to found the Institute for Productive Learning in Europe (IPLE) at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in Berlin in 1991 and the International Network of Productive Schools (INEPS), which currently has about 50 educational projects in 15 countries.
In Germany, the states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein currently offer Productive Learning in general secondary schools.
